Salaar: Part 1-Ceasefire is an upcoming action-thriller written and directed by Prashanth Neel and produced by Vijay Kiragandur. A gang leader makes a promise to a dying friend to take on other criminal gangs.

The forthcoming Telugu-language action thriller Salaar: Part 1-Ceasefire is written and directed by Prashanth Neel with production handled by Vijay Kiragandur. Along with Prithviraj Sukumaran, Shruti Haasan, Jagapathi Babu, Tinu Anand, Ishwari Rao, Shriya Reddy, and Ramachandra Raju, Prabhas plays the main role.

The movie was revealed in December 2020, and main production started in January 2021 in the Godavarikhani, Telangana, area. Ravi Basrur is the composer of the music, and Bhuvan Gowda is responsible for the photography. The movie is slated to debut in theaters everywhere on December 22, 2023.

Actress Shruti Haasan was cast in a lead role in January 2021. Kannada actor Madhu Guruswamy is set to play an important role. In March, actress Easwari Rao was signed to play the role of Prabhas’s mother. Later in August, Jagapathi Babu joined the cast, whose character was revealed to be Rajamanar.

In October 2021, Malayalam actor Prithviraj Sukumaran began talks to play a pivotal role in the film. In March 2022, Prabhas said during a promotional event of his film Radhe Shyam that Prithviraj is a part of Salaar. Later in June, Prithviraj said that he had given a nod to the script but was trying to accommodate dates to work on the film. Later in October 2022, Prithviraj’s role was confirmed and it marks his return to Telugu cinema after 12 years following his appearance in the film Police Police (2010). Shriya Reddy also plays an important role.

In mid-August 2020, it was reported that Prabhas and Prashanth Neel were to collaborate for the next directorial venture after KGF: Chapter 2 (2022). The former was reportedly influenced by the latter’s debut film Ugram (2014) and wanted to make a film in this genre. Prashant confirmed the collaboration between the two during a media interaction in mid-October. On December 2, the project was publicly announced by Hombale Films, who are financing the project.

Touted to be an action thriller, the film marks the first collaboration between directors Prashanth Neel and Prabhas and Neel’s first Telugu venture. Talking about his role, Prabhas said, “My character is extremely violent, so it’s something I have never done before. Some reports claimed that the film is a remake of Neil’s debut film Ugram, however, Neil clarified that Salaar is not a remake but an original story written for Prabhas.

The film was formally launched on 16 January 2021 in Hyderabad. While Bhuvan Gowda is the cameraman, Ravi Basrur is the composer of the music.

The shooting of the film began on 29 January 2021 in the coal mines near Godavarikhani town in Telangana. The first schedule was completed by February 2021. The second schedule of the film began in August 2021 in Hyderabad.

By March 2022, about 30% of the shooting was completed. Filming was halted due to the release of Prabhas’s Radhe Shyam (2022) and Neil’s K.G.F.: Chapter 2 (2022) and was planned to resume in May. However, Prabhas suffered a knee fracture during his holiday in Spain in March, further delaying the shooting. In June 2022, a new schedule began at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad with Prabhas and Haasan joining the sets. The team also shot a 20-minute long action sequence in the middle of the ocean, spending approximately ₹10 crore on the scene.

The makers of Salaar reportedly used Dark Centric Theme (DCT) technology to shoot the film, making it the first Indian film to do so. As a result the film’s light pattern and color palette will become darker.
