Development

In mid-August 2020, it was reported that Prabhas and Prashanth Neel were to collaborate for the next directorial venture after KGF: Chapter 2 (2022). The former was reportedly influenced by the latter’s debut film Ugram (2014) and wanted to make a film in this genre. Prashant confirmed the collaboration between the two during a media interaction in mid-October. On December 2, the project was publicly announced by Hombale Films, who are financing the project.

Touted to be an action thriller, the film marks the first collaboration between directors Prashanth Neel and Prabhas and Neel’s first Telugu venture. Talking about his role, Prabhas said, “My character is extremely violent, so it’s something I have never done before. Some reports claimed that the film is a remake of Neil’s debut film Ugram, however, Neil clarified that Salaar is not a remake but an original story written for Prabhas.

The film was formally launched on 16 January 2021 in Hyderabad. While Bhuvan Gowda is the cameraman, Ravi Basrur is the composer of the music.

filming

The shooting of the film began on 29 January 2021 in the coal mines near Godavarikhani town in Telangana. The first schedule was completed by February 2021. The second schedule of the film began in August 2021 in Hyderabad.

By March 2022, about 30% of the shooting was completed. Filming was halted due to the release of Prabhas’s Radhe Shyam (2022) and Neil’s K.G.F.: Chapter 2 (2022) and was planned to resume in May. However, Prabhas suffered a knee fracture during his holiday in Spain in March, further delaying the shooting. In June 2022, a new schedule began at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad with Prabhas and Haasan joining the sets. The team also shot a 20-minute long action sequence in the middle of the ocean, spending approximately ₹10 crore on the scene.

The makers of Salaar reportedly used Dark Centric Theme (DCT) technology to shoot the film, making it the first Indian film to do so. As a result the film’s light pattern and color palette will become darker.
